Whitefish nonprofit hosts veterans for ski retreat

| February 14, 2024 12:00 AM

The Whitefish Veterans Support Team hosted nine Marines from 3rd Squad, 1st Platoon, Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Division for a retreat from Feb. 4-9.

The Marines served in the same squad during a deployment to Afghanistan in 2011. They spent five days alpine skiing and snowboarding at Whitefish Mountain Resort and enjoying camaraderie with their fellow squad members, 13 years after their return from Afghanistan. All airfare, lodging, skiing/snowboarding equipment, passes, lessons and meals were provided by contributions from WVST donors.

This winter WVST partnered with international journalist, Elliott Woods, who was embedded with these Marines during their tour in Sangin, Afghanistan. Elliott created an award-winning documentary podcast, ThirdSquad.com, that describes life in Sangin through the eyes of the Marines, who served during the “surge" and survived horrific combat in June 2011 that left half of the platoon dead or wounded.

The mission of WVST is to engage veterans and their families in physically challenging and fun activities as well as provide much-needed downtime. The activities are tailored to individual needs so each person feels a sense of accomplishment. Each event addresses issues unique to military life and the transition to civilian life.

The Whitefish Veterans Support Team is a donor-based, charitable organization that is dedicated to providing support and new beginnings for veterans. Of the donations, 92% directly benefit veterans and their families.
