Two people have died of influenza in Flathead County so far this season, the Flathead City-County Health Department reported Wednesday.

The two deaths involve county residents over the age of 65.

According to a Montana Department of Health and Human Services report issued Feb. 19, flu activity statewide picked up between Feb. 13 and Feb. 19, with 290 new cases reported that week, compared to 155 cases the week prior. Eighty-six cases were reported in Flathead County that week.

Through Feb. 19, Montana reported 3,536 total flu cases, including 98 hospitalizations. Only one death had been reported in the state at the time of the report. The majority of hospitalization were among people 65 and older.

The report notes that Influenza A is the dominate type circulating in the state.

Flathead Health Officer Joe Russell encourages people 6 months of age and older to get the flu vaccine.

“Influenza can be a serious illness that leads to complications and death in some cases,” said Russell. “We recommend that all eligible individuals receive a flu vaccination to protect themselves and their families.”

The influenza vaccine is available by appointment at the Flathead City-County Health Department. To schedule, call 406-751-8110.
