GREAT FALLS — The Flathead Brave Brawlers won yet another boys wrestling tournament Saturday, thumping Billings Senior 43-18 for the championship of the Montana AA Duals.

The win, a first for the program, capped a solid Saturday at Great Falls High for top-ranked Flathead, which beat No. 2 Billings West 48-23 in the semifinals. Senior was ranked No. 3 in this week’s AA Coaches Poll, but saw Flathead win the first eight matches, from 138 pounds through 285, in the final to lead 37-0.

“This is something we really wanted this year,” Flathead coach Jeff Thompson said. “We’ve had a lot of success as a program, but we have never won the AA Duals. We wanted to prove that we are the best dual team in the state in 2022.

“We are going to soak this in, this weekend, but this team wants more.”

Several Brawlers had excellent tournaments, starting with Anders Thompson, who scored four pins at 170 pounds. Chase Youso had three pins — two at 285 and one at 205 — while Noah Poe-Hatten had two pins at 182 and an 8-5 decision over Senior’s Charlie Desmarias at 205 in the final.

Sawyer Troupe added a couple pins at 182 when Poe-Hatten moved up.

Gabe Lake had three pins at 160 for Flathead; Fin Nadeau had a fall and a major decision to go with two forfeit wins at 145.

Asher Kemppainen, back wrestling at 138, scored a 3-2 win over Billings West standout Jesse Arness (ranked No. 2) in the semifinals to go with a technical fall against Bozeman and an 8-3 decision over Senior’s Idren Peak (No. 2 at 132).

“Asher made the jump back to 138 and showed the rest of the state that he is a title contender,” Coach Thompson said. “He beat a returning state champion from West and a state finalist the very next match.

“Fin Nadeau just wore out the competition, getting two takedowns in 9 seconds in the finals against Senior, to get a major (decision, 12-4 over Jalen Vladic).”

Thompson noted that Aiden Downing went 3-0 Saturday, including his first win against Cole Krutzfeldt of Billings Senior.

“Chase Youso wrestled great at both 205 and heavyweight, and Forest Howell beat two ranked kids today at heavyweight,” he added.

Flathead’s dual record is 13-0.

Glacier finished fifth at the Duals, ending with a 45-29 win over Billings Skyview. The Wolfpack’s Teegan Vasquez had a couple decisions — 8-5 over Senior’s Peak, and 8-2 over Skyview’s Hunter Ketcham — to go with a pair of falls at 132 pounds, while the Pack upped its dual record this season to 10-8.

“Today was a total team effort,” Glacier coach Ross Dankers said. “Every dual we had different people stepping up and getting big wins and big pins, and giving us the momentum.

“With only one senior in the starting lineup, it’s just so exciting to see these young kids stepping up to the challenge.”

Aiden Krause had an excellent tournament at 182 for the Wolfpack, scoring three pins; Royce Conklin, the senior, had three pins at 170 and Kaleb Shine had two at 138. Shine, Krause and Conklin all went 3-1.
