Port Polson Players present 'No Coward's Epitaph'

| November 11, 2021 12:00 AM

Port Polson Players, in association with the Mission Valley Friends of the Arts, present the world premiere “No Coward’s Epitaph,” a musical tribute honoring the life and legacy of Thomas Francis Meagher.

Meagher was the Irish rebel who became Montana’s first acting territorial governor and the bronze figure on the horse outside the state capitol in Helena.

Books have been written about Meaghe, however, this is the first telling of his incredible story as musical theater. The show is scripted with many of Meagher’s own words, with an original musical score grounded in 1800s Irish American folk music.

The show features Montana actors and musicians and plays two weeks at Polson’s Theatre on the Lake. Port Polson Players producer Neal Lewing wrote both the script and the music for the production.

Performances will take place beginning today, Nov. 11, through Nov. 21, on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Curtain time is at 7:30 p.m., with Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.

“No Coward’s Epitaph” spans 20 years of Meagher’s public life in Ireland, Van Diemen’s Land, (Tasmania), during the Civil War, in New York, and finally in Montana where he drown in the Missouri River at Fort Benton on July 1, 1867. His body was never found. There remain many theories as to why and how his death occurred.
