Historian Doug Ammons presents “Dynamic Montana in Time Lapse”

| November 11, 2021 12:00 AM

The Northwest Montana History Museum welcomes back Doug Ammons, who will give an innovative, visual presentation on how Montana has changed over time, at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14.

The final decades of the 19th century were among the most dynamic in the history of Montana, as the West was “won” and trading posts began to sprout in communities. Each image that Ammons will introduce starts from this time period, before evolving into the modern landscape, a century of transformation depicted in mere seconds. Beyond the visuals, Ammon’s storytelling will bring the history to life. Ammons has delivered this presentation in Kalispell before, but has since expanded it with never-before-seen content and more of a local, Northwest Montana focus.

Ammons attended the University of Montana for degrees in mathematics and physics, and his Ph.D. in experimental psychology, and has pursued many other interests such as geology and history. He is an award-winning author, Emmy Award winning cinematographer, scientific editor and extreme kayaker. There will be book sales and signing by the author.

Ammons last visited the museum in 2019 with his presentation “A Darkness Lit By Heroes,” an account of the Granite Mountain-Speculator Mining Disaster in Butte. The book has been chosen as the museum's Historic Book Club selection for Dec. 1. It is available in the museum’s Schoolbell Books & Gifts, and Ammons will also be selling and signing copies of the book after Sunday’s presentation.

Masks are not required but are highly recommended for all attendees. The event is free to attend, and all donations will go to Ammons to offset his travel expenses.
