Dennis Swensgard

| March 25, 2020 1:00 AM

Dennis Swensgard passed peacefully on March 16, 2020, only 11 days before his birthday of March 27, 1944.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Jean Swensgard, infant sister Lana Gail and infant brother, Greggory Roy.

He is survived by his wife Rebecca; stepsons Richard and Robert; and grandchildren Taylor Dean, Reese Dean and Carson Dean; as well as sisters, Kareen (Glee Bratt), and Renae (Alan Anderson), and brothers Don (Butch) and Jim (Gail) Swensgard.

Denny grew up in Fort Benton and graduated from Northern Montana College where he played football for the college. Many friends from those early years have been his staunchest friends and encouragers. Summer get-togethers and visits were high points every year.

Family reunions were another favorite event. A lake and his boat had to be available as he endeavored to teach all his nephews and nieces how to water ski. He was also proud of teaching most of them the art of downhill skiing.

Dennis loved Montana history. He had an in-depth knowledge of Fort Benton’s early days and was always eager to discuss historical events with “old timers.” Even though he was retired from his profession as an industrial arts teacher at Kalispell Jr. High, he never really retired. One of his finest achievements was building hundreds of toys for the “Toys for Tots” program. He continued to substitute teach for several years and informally passed along his expertise in many areas. Denny was always a teacher.

In later years, mostly because of the blessings of a faithful and loving wife as his caregiver, Denny became a thankful and committed follower of his Lord Jesus Christ. He came to love the Bible as he loved his church family and served his God through good works such as taking others into his home to help them through tough times and serving as a Church camera man.

As one of the early LVAD (left ventricular assist device) recipients Denny was also grateful to God for the extra eight years it gave him to share with family and friends. As his time grew near and we said our last goodbyes he was able to express his love and concerns to us all.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be directed to the family for causes dear to Denny’s heart. Due to the coronavirus, dates and times of services will be delayed until May or June of this year.
