Glacier, Flathead in hunt at Rocky

MISSOULA - Fifth and sixth places, respectively.

The Glacier Wolfpack and the Flathead Braves wrestling teams are in good spots after the first day of the 34th annual Jug Beck Rocky Mountain Classic at Missoula Sentinel.

Glacier has 80.5 points and Flathead has 79.5. The leaders are all out of staters - defending champion University High is first at 111, Central Valley second at 100, Coeur d'Alene is third at 99 and Mead is fourth with 86.

As for the other local teams, Polson is 14th with 50.5 points, Columbia Falls is 22nd with 26 points and Libby is 24th with 21 points.

There are 27 teams in the tournament.

Flathead has four in the semis - Cody Tally, Steel Hahn, Larry Francis and Connor Thomas.

Glacier put three into the semis - Christian Knopp, Kaleb Mitchell and Alek Mitchell - and still has 11 wrestlers in the mix. Riley Pisk was injured after his first match of the day and was unable to continue.

"I feel real good about where we are at," said Glacier coach Mark Fischer.

"I think all three of those kids wrestled really dominant today. I just don't think there was any doubt they were going to win. They just went out and got it done," Fischer said.

"It seems kids won the matches they were supposed to win. (Today) is going to be a huge grind, but I really think our kids are up for it," he said.

Now is the tough part of the tournament, Fischer added.

"It just gets really physical. Every match is a one- or two-point match. You get a chance to see what kind of heart these kids have. It's cool to see," he said.

Wrestling begins at 9:30 a.m. today with championships set for 4:30 p.m.

Other locals in the semis are Jacob Young of Polson, 135, Kyle Leir, Libby, 140, and Josiah Clairmont, Polson, 285.

For the Braves, Friday was good - and frustrating.

Good in the number of kids in the semis, good in that every kid won a match and all but one of Flathead's wrestlers is still in - and everyone who is in is only one match from placing.

The frustrating part for Flathead is that it was only able to take nine wrestlers to the tournament.

"It's the same thing we've had going around with the whole group. It's been kind of frustrating battling sickness and injury," said Flathead coach Matt Owen.

"It's really tough to compete (in the team standings) when everybody has four or five more kids than you. But the kids we do have are doing well," Owen said.

The Braves are without 171-pounder Josh Erickson, out with an illness, for this tournament.

"All the guys in the semis had a great first day. Cody Tally looked really strong from start to finish. Steel (Hahn) wrestled great.

"Larry (Francis) avenged a loss he took last weekend to Riley Pisk. He had kind of a mental block on him, but we had a takedown early that set the tone of the match.

"And Connor (Thomas) looked really good," he added.

"I'm very pleased. Of course, a little frustrated we don't have our full lineup, but that's out of our hands."
