Flathead boys fall to Big Sky in soccer

MISSOULA - Flathead avoided a shutout with a James McCarthy goal at 79 minutes as Missoula Big Sky came away with a 3-1 Western AA boys soccer victory on Saturday.

Big Sky, up 1-0 at the half, outshot Flathead 20-11.

Jordan Remington had seven keeper saves for Flathead.

"We didn't play well," Flathead coach Chris Putzler said.

"That's what it boils down to.

"We've been making great strides. We were even short more players today. We played three JV kids in the varsity match"

Flathead, 1-6, plays Glacier on Thursday, 5:30 p.m., at Legends Stadium.

COLUMBIA FALLS - Polson exploded for five goals in the final half to pull away from an upstart Columbia Falls squad.

Jon Heutmaker and Peter Hanson had two goals apiece.

"We saw improvement in the first half, but you need to play 80 minutes to have any kind of success," Columbia Falls coach Peter Browne said.

"Our inexperience showed in the second half."

Columbia Falls, 0-7-0, plays at Libby on Tuesday, 3:30 p.m.

MISSOULA - Make that four ties in seven Western AA matches for Flathead.

The Bravettes used Chelsea Shuman's goal at 59 minutes to tie it.

Big Sky scored five minutes into play.

"I think they outplayed us in the first half," Flathead coach Scott Warnell said.

"We regrouped and came back and played a lot better in the second half, connecting passes and getting shots on goal."

Flathead, 1-2-4, faces Glacier on Thursday, 7:30 p.m.

COLUMBIA FALLS - McKenzie Kiser had assists on all three Columbia Falls goals as the Wildkats got the better of Northern A opponent Polson.

Wildkat goals were by Danielle Delventhal, McKenzie Reeve and Cedar Jordt.

Madeline Hewston scored Polson's goal on a direct kick.

The Wildkats had 14 shots on goal to five for the Pirates and 15 corner kicks to four for the Pirates.

Polson's Jacie Morrison had six goalie saves.

"I thought we started out real well and played the first half pretty good," said Wildkat coach Greg Trenerry.

"The second half, we started OK, but then we let up a little bit. Then (the Pirates' got their goal and we played frantic for a little while.

"I give Polson credit. They never gave up and they played us hard in the second half."

Trenerry complimented the efforts of McKenzie Kiser and Cedar Jordt, as well as freshman goalie Kira Kamrud.

"She played pretty well for her first game," Trenerry said of Kamrud.

"She didn't have too many saves, but she had a couple of key ones," he said.

The Wildkats, now 4-3-0, 2-2, head to Libby on Tuesday.
