| October 19, 2009 2:00 AM

Flathead County Sheriff's deputies and North Valley Search and Rescue were called when a father and his teenage son and daughter, along with their dog, were several hours late in returning from a hike on Grant Ridge Loop in the Great Bear Wilderness. They reportedly ate lunch in Columbia Falls, and then took off for the hike Saturday, expecting to be back around 8 p.m.

The man called his wife from the ridge top at 5 p.m., saying it was snowing and they were losing the trail so they were turning back. She still had not seen them by shortly after midnight, so she called the sheriff's office. A deputy was posted at the trailhead and stayed until 4 a.m. They didn't show up by then, but North Valley Search members said the hikers safely made it off the trail around 5 a.m.
