Playing catch-up in Western AA soccer, the Missoula Sentinel girls got a much-needed 3-2 victory against Flathead at Kidsports Complex on Tuesday.

The third-place Spartans (4-1-4) scored two quick goals in the first 12 minutes and added an insurance goal in the 65th minute that ended up paying off after the Bravettes (2-3-5) rallied late.

With two games left in the regular season, Sentinel is chasing Glacier (4-3-2) and Missoula Big Sky (4-0-5) for first place and an automatic state tourney berth.

Junior Chelsea Shuman scored her seventh goal of the season in the first half for Flathead and Malia Ozegovich, a freshman, notched a score with two minutes left to play.

"We had a hard time finishing again today," Flathead coach Scott Warnell said. "We battled hard through the game, but we just had a couple breakdowns that allowed Sentinel to get their goals."

Karli Kusler made 13 saves for the fifth-place Bravettes, who finish with Helena Capital (1-3-4) on the road Saturday and Big Sky at home Oct. 17.

Down the final stretch, the key for the Bravettes will be playing better as a team, cleaning up the passing game and learning to finish, Warnell said.

"If we start doing those things it will be hard for teams to beat us," he said.
