A day for Mom to take a bow

Mothers of the world, take a bow.

It's your day to take credit for everything you do every day, including this one.

Of course, it's a cliche by now to list the many tasks delegated to "Mom," but no matter how long the list gets, it isn't long enough. Plus, there are all the secret accomplishments moms have that they never tell us about - saving us from embarrassment, rescuing us from our own mistakes, playing peacemaker behind the scenes like a family-size Henry Kissinger.

Oh sure, not every Mom is bigger than life, but if they fall short, it is usually not because they didn't care, but just because we expect so much of them.

In any case, have a good day, Mom - and thanks for putting us first so much of the time.

It's election season again - although it's close to home this year.

Municipal elections are coming up in November, with filing now open for candidates for city council positions in Kalispell, Whitefish and Columbia Falls as well as mayoral positions in Kalispell and Columbia Falls.

These are important jobs, since the people we elect to run our cities help determine the extent of a wide variety of city services, as well as how much taxpayers have to pay for them.

Races in Kalispell and Whitefish, especially, bear watching this year.

City officials in both Kalispell and Whitefish have endured criticism for their policies, particularly regarding how welcoming each municipality should be toward development.

This is a time for critics to put up or shut up.

Think you can do a better job? Then file for the election. The deadline to file is July 2.
