Donald Eugene Downing ("Uncle Don") "went home to be with Jesus' on July 15, 2009. He was born in Victor to Bill and Kathleen Downing on Aug. 12, 1925. He hopped a freight train at age 14 to Seattle and started his many travels in which the stories of his life have been shared with family and friends.

Don sailed in the Merchant Marines between 1943-1971 and provided supplies and support in World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars.

Don moved to the Flathead in 1955, where he raised his family. Don had two daughters, Sandra and Susan, with his first wife. Don then married Arlene Sundvor and had four children, sons, Pat and wife, Theresa, Mike and wife, Colleen, Jim and wife, Bobbie, and daughter, Dawn Rene'. Don had 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He opened his home and heart to family, friends and strangers.

Don was a hard worker, raising four children as a single father. Occupations included logger, sailor and heavy equipment operator. He loved cutting firewood and spent his retirement years running Uncle Don's Fruit & Ice Cream Stand. He loved talking to the many tourists who visited his stand.

Don gave his life to Jesus Christ at the age of 52 and has spent his last 32 years serving Him. He loved sharing the news about Jesus and was loved by many, and will be missed but not forgotten.

Don was preceded in death by parents, Bill and Kathleen Downing; brother, Miles Downing; sister-in-law, Diane Sigman; and great-nephew, Dustin Downing.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 19, at Hungry Horse Chapel, with a potluck reception following.
