Northwest Montana counties have been awarded $95,260 in federal funds under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program, the local United Way office has announced.

Local agencies that provide emergency food and shelter are encouraged to apply for funding through the program.

Flathead County was awarded $53,763 under the program that supplements local emergency food and shelter programs.

Lake County will receive $16,589, Lincoln County $16,184 and Sanders County $8,724.

Since the program was established in 1983, more than $3.1 billion has been awarded to 12,000 human services agencies in more than 2,500 communities.

A local board will determine how the money appropriated by Congress will be distributed to help expand the capacity of food and shelters programs.

Qualifying agencies in the four counties that have not submitted applications are encouraged to apply.

The deadline is Jan. 23. Applications are available through the United Way. To request an application, call 752-7266 in the Kalispell area or toll-free 888-720-7266 outside the local calling area. The mailing address is P.O. Box 7217, Kalispell, MT 59904.
