The Glacier RCers will host the Greater Northwest Model Airplane Fly-In and Swap Meet today and Sunday in a flying field off of Whitefish Stage Road, 10 miles north of Kalispell.

Fly-in scheduledthis weekend near Whitefish

The swap meet features private and commercial displays of airplanes, helicopters, cars, boats and other model hobbies. Top pilots from throughout the region will fly and exhibit a wide range of aircraft, including warbirds, scale models, World War II fighters, pylon racers and helicopters. Local model-jet pilots will perform both days, flying turbine-powered aircraft.

Take turns today flying "Big Ugly" as co-pilot on the buddy box, with an experienced pilot on the controls.

Gates open at 10 a.m. both days. To find the field, turn east on K-Lazy-D Ranch Road. There will be full concessions both days.

Admission is $5 a car, with parking by Civil Air Patrol youths, who are earning money for their organization.

West Glacier - Coram firemen's benefit is today

The Coram-West Glacier volunteer firefighters hold their 32nd annual benefit dance at 8 p.m. today at the Dew Drop Inn at Coram. The Don Lawrence Orchestra will entertain.

In addition to the music, there will be a live and silent auction featuring donated artwork and goods from local artists and businesses from Columbia Falls to Essex. Auction items include framed and unframed prints, raft trips, golf outings, lodging, clothing, books, gravel and various handmade specialty items. A featured item is a handmade log bench with an elk carving donated by Michelle and Tony Whitaker. There also will be spot prizes awarded throughout the evening.

Raffle tickets are $1 for a chance to win a $1,000 shopping spree at Bitney's Furniture. Tickets can be purchased at the Glacier Center and the Dew Drop Inn in Coram or from any Fire Department worker. The prize-winning tickets will be drawn at the end of the benefit, and you do not need to be present to win.

Barbarians gather at Shire event

The Shire of Crystal Crags is holding a weekend of events, running today and Sunday at Castle Silver Oak, 280 Trap Road, in Columbia Falls, off Montana 206.

Activities will include melee battles, including boat and village battles, and tournaments. There will also be melee battles and tournaments in the art of rapier, classes, archery competitions, kids' boffer tourney, bardic competition, Best Barbarian competition and an auction. There will be merchants and food merchants on site.

The Shire of Crystal Crags is a branch of the international, nonprofit organization The Society for Creative Anachronism.

Quilting show at fairgrounds

The 25th annual Flathead Quilters Guild Wildflower Memories Quilt Show is today and Sunday at the Flathead County Fairgrounds in Kalispell. The event will feature a merchant mall, food, silent auction, members' boutique and demonstrations. Quilts also will be for sale.

This year's featured quilter is Salena Beckwith.

A special 25th anniversary program and entertainment will begin at 2 p.m. today. On Sunday, the raffle will be drawn for the quilt, "It's a Bloom'n Miracle."

Admission is $3. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Touch of Grace clinic.

Hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today; and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
