Kalispell police are investigating the death of a man who died Wednesday afternoon of a gunshot wound to the head.

The 66-year-old man's body was found on a lawn at the intersection of Sixth Avenue East and 13th Street at about 12:30 p.m.

"We're treating the cause of death as unknown," said detective Lt. Roger Nasset.

Nobody witnessed the shooting, he said.

People were inside the house near where the man died, but "nobody knows anything. Nobody saw anything," Nasset said.

There was a gun beneath the man's body, indicating the shooting was likely a suicide, he said, but police were gathering evidence from the yard and interviewing people who knew the man, as if his death were a crime.

Unidentified by late Wednesday, the man recently told friends that he is ill, Nasset said. He didn't threaten to hurt himself, though.

Flathead Deputy County Coroner Jim Browder will determine the cause of death.
