FHS boys fourth in state golf

Iverson and Waller earn all-state honors
MISSOULA - For the Flathead boys golf team, 2006 turned out just like 2005 - a fourth-place showing in the team standings and two golfers earning all-state honors by placing in the top 10.
"I was just hoping the boys could get into third place at least," said Flathead coach Alice Ritzman.
"They just didn't quite get the job done today."
Billings West won both the girls and boys AA state titles Saturday and also had both medalists.
West scored 614 in boys play, led by Jake Hedge, 71-70-141.
The West girls shot 686 with Erin King on top, 84-80-164.
Flathead was sitting in fifth place after Friday's session, 12 shots off the pace. Flathead missed out on third place by nine shots with a 640.
Senior was second, 619, and Sentinel third, 631.
Larry Iverson, a sophomore, finished fifth in the medalist race. He came through with a solid final 18, posting a 72 on Saturday at Phantom Hills. That was one of the better rounds of the day.
He shot an 83 on Friday at the Missoula Country Club.
"A nice comeback for him," said Ritzman.
"Just an unfortunate situation what happened to him yesterday with that bad start. For him to come back strong as he did and have as good an attitude (was amazing)."
Iverson finished third at state last year.
Drennan Waller had the fifth best total Friday, 76, and put together another solid day with an 83 for a 159 to place ninth.
The Flathead girls wound up in sixth place thank to a strong performance by freshman Karli Aurich. She missed out on all-state honors by two strokes.
The Bravettes shot a 759.
"I'm very proud of them," said Ritzman.
"Probably had one of their best tournaments of the year. As a team, they played better."
The Flathead girls were ninth last year.
