Whitefish walk highlights work of local artists

| January 27, 2006 1:00 AM

More than 30 downtown merchants displaying art

Downtown businesses in Whitefish are featuring the work of local artists in their display windows for two weeks in conjunction with Winter Carnival.

ArtWalk 2006 begins with an opening reception on Feb. 2. Guided tours of the ArtWalk are from 5 to 6 p.m. and 6 to 7 p.m. on that evening. Those wishing to join a guided tour on opening night should meet at Stumptown Art Studio at 5 p.m. or 6 p.m. The reception follows from 7 to 9 p.m. at 145 Central Ave. in Whitefish.

ArtWalk maps are available at all 31 participating downtown merchants to guide viewers on this outdoor walking tour of art. The artwork being shown includes watercolors, oil and acrylic paintings, drawings, pen and ink, photography, pottery, sculpture, silk painting and more.

Artists of the Flathead Valley who take part in this exhibition are showing original work, most of which is for sale. Some of the artists are established regionally and nationally; some are "emerging." One of the windows features the work of Whitefish High School art classes.

Maryann Fielder, who founded the ArtWalk 19 years ago, will be showing pieces in the Sappari window.

Other participating artists are: Rusty Wells, Heidi Haugen, Deborah and Greg Schatz, Kristen Murphy, Barbara Candelaria, Lois Sturgis, Cindy Shaw, George Garrity, Charisse Duchardt, Katrice Demont, Tatiana Zolotareff, Nanci Williams, Donna Merola, Linda Christensen, Jane Latus Emmert, Kelly Bort, Maryann Fielder, Darrell Gray, Lael Gray, Kelsey Schmidt-Summer, Kay Lynn, Mikie di Muro, Frank Vestey, Jeff Arcel, Lorinda Smith, Rob Akey, Cari Stiffarm, Fred Warf, John Rose, Denae Weimer, Charles Rogers, Linda Katsuda, gallery artists and students of Stumptown Art Studio.

Proceeds from ArtWalk go towards the art scholarship programs provided through Stumptown Art Studio. Stumptown Art Studio is a nonprofit community art center.

Public donations toward the scholarship program are very much appreciated and can be made by stopping by or sending a check to P.O. Box 4938, Whitefish, MT 59937. For more information, call 862-5929.
