Dorothy M. Kern, 91

Dorothy Margery Mills Kern, 91, passed away April 24, 2006, at Northwest Health Center in Kalispell.

She was born Oct. 14,1914, in Harvard, Neb., the daughter of Earl F. and Helena Betsy Colburn. Dorothy moved to the Emmett Valley in Idaho as a small child and went to school there.

She married James Arthur Mills, on Sept. 7, 1932. She was widowed in January 1972, and she remarried Lloyd Kern in July 1974.

Dorothy and James made their home in the Emmett Valley for 10 years then moved to Kooskia, Idaho. When James passed away in 1972, she moved back to Emmett. She worked a short time at the cafeteria at the college at Boise, Idaho. In 1996, she moved to her daughter Virginia's home in Grangeville, Idaho. In 1997, she moved to Kalispell. She lived at Big Sky Manor, Brendan House, and Immanuel Lutheran Home.

She was a seamstress and homemaker. She spent many hours making quilts as well as clothing for her family. She crocheted many afghans and doilies, and embroidered various items. She also did a lot of painting on various items. She was very artistic. She also enjoyed her beautiful flowers and gardening. She did a lot of canning.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, James and Lloyd; her sister, Edith Scott; her brother, Ralph Colburn; and a stepgranddaughter, Geraldine Kerkindahl.

She is survived by her two sons, Earl F. and wife, Jeanine Mills, from Harrison, Idaho, and James A. Jr., and wife, Cozette Mills, from Vancouver, Wash.; two daughters, Margery A. and husband, James Lee, from Kalispell, and Virginia I. and husband, Monty Ewing, from Grangeville; 14 grandchildren and 10 stepgrandchildren, Tessa Swift, Tracy, Ken, Crystal, Rita, Kay, Rocky; Jenny, Daniel, Samuel, Katherine Mills; Lawrence, Mark, Jerry, Russell and Richard Faulkner; Jackie Sverdrup, James, Mark and Daniel Lee; Sheri Evins; and Charles and Eric Ewing; 47 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. April 28, at the Emmett Cemetery in Emmett.
