A bicyclist was injured in a collision with a car around 8:38 p.m. Wednesday near Gateway Community Center, according to the Kalispell Police Department.

The driver of a sedan was reportedly exiting to the right out of the Gateway Community Center west parking lot when her vehicle collided with a bicyclist who was riding eastbound along U.S. 2. The cyclist, who was identified as a 49-year-old man, was taken to Kalispell Regional Medical Center with injuries.

The cyclist was riding on the wrong side of the road, according to state law and Kalispell Municipal Code. Bicyclists are legally required to ride on the right side of the road.

The driver apparently checked for traffic coming from the left side of the road but didn’t look to the right side.

Neither the driver nor the bicyclist received citations, but Kalispell Police Officer Garrett Smith said the biker was at fault for the accident.

Two lanes of traffic were closed for approximately ten minutes on U.S. 2 following the accident.

“It’s a pretty common accident,” Smith said.
