2 Montana campgrounds with offensive names to be renamed

| July 2, 2020 1:49 PM

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — The Montana Bureau of Reclamation has announced it will rename two campgrounds on Canyon Ferry Reservoir that had racist origins.

The agency used duct tape to cover the roadside signs leading to Chinamen Cove Campground and Confederate Campground, and will refer to them as Campground 1 and Campground 2 until new names are decided, the Independent Record reported.

Chinaman is defined as a native of China, but the use of the word is considered offensive to many, agency officials said.

The agency was not immediately available to comment on the timing of the decision as conversations about racism have swept the country and Confederate monuments have been removed.

The bureau has not yet issued a formal announcement or media release about the decision.
