Mercer, Flathead 1st at golf invite

Flathead sophomore Marcella Mercer closed with a 4-over 78 on the Championship 18 at Buffalo Hill Golf Club on Thursday to take medalist honors for girls at the Kalispell Invitational golf tournament.

Mercer had the low round of the day and finished one shot better than Emily Garden of Missoula Sentinel.

Garden turned in an 80 to finish at 159.

Garden opened with a 79 on Wednesday at Northern Pines Golf Club for a one-shot edge on Mercer.

It was the second straight medalist title for Mercer. She topped the invitational field at Helena a week ago.

Flathead’s Jillian Wynne had an outstanding two days, shooting 93-86—179 to finish fourth and help the Flathead girls capture the team title with a 732 total.

Flathead’s Cassidy Lavin, 196, finished 13th. She missed a top 10 finish by three shots.

Glacier was second at 764 and Polson third with a 796.

Kate Trunkle led Glacier, finishing third overall — 86-88—174. Teammate Hailey Iverson, 95-90—185, was sixth.

Alana Griffin of the Glacier JV had two impressive days, shooting 92-90—182 to place fifth.

Cali Cannon led Polson, tying Iverson for sixth. Cannon shot 94-91—185.

Missoula Sentinel, with three boys in the top 10, pulled away on the final day to take the top spot in the team action with a 638 total. Glacier, 656, was second and Missoula Big Sky, 675, third.

Glacier was just six shots behind Sentinel after Wednesday’s action.

Glacier’s Keaton Cassidy shot 75-81—156 to finish fifth and seven shots behind the winner.

Tucker Pietrykowski of Great Falls C.M. Russell, 79-70—149; Jack Johnston of Sentinel, 73-76—149, and Connor Mora of Great Falls, 73-76—149, all tied for first. They finished, in order, 1-2-3 on a scorecard playoff.

Pietrykowski was 2-under on the final day, the only player to break par.

Polson’s Trey Kelley, 76-79—155, was fourth.
