SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) The Latest on the shooting of a Sacramento police officer (all times local):

1:00 a.m.

The Sacramento Police Department has confirmed that a female officer shot while assisting on a domestic violence call has died.

Deputy Chief Dave Peletta said during a news conference early Thursday that 26-year-old Tara O'Sullivan died at UC Davis Medical Center hours after a gunman opened fire on her while assisting a woman removing belongings from a home. The woman was not injured.

Peletta said O'Sullivan was partnered with a training officer when she was shot just before 6 p.m. He did not offer any more information.

The Sacramento Bee reports that according to city records, O'Sullivan had been working for the city since January 2018. She was part of the first class of graduates of Sacramento State's Law Enforcement Candidate Scholars program in 2017 and went on to the Sacramento Police Academy.

Sacramento police say an elementary school is open for residents who have been evacuated from a neighborhood where a gunman shot an officer.

A gunman has been barricaded for hours after shooting the officer, who was helping a woman gather her belongings to move out of a home in the North Sacramento neighborhood.

Police say residents who have been evacuated can go to Noralto Elementary School.

Police have not yet been able to contact the suspect.

The wounded officer was taken to a hospital in serious condition and the woman she was helping was not shot.

9:30 p.m.

Sacramento police say an officer is in serious condition after she was shot by a rifleman during a domestic violence call.

Police say the officer was helping a woman gather her belongings to move out of a home in the North Sacramento neighborhood when she was shot shortly Wednesday evening.

Sgt. Vance Chandler says an armored vehicle was brought in to rescue the officer but it took more than 45 minutes to get her to a hospital because the gunman kept firing a rifle.

Chandler says nobody else was hurt and the woman who was being helped by the officer was not shot.

The gunman still was firing two hours later and police hadn't been able to contact him.

A Sacramento police officer shot while responding to a report of shots fired is said to have serious injuries.

Councilman Allen Warren tells the Sacramento Bee that the officer is, in his words, "hurt bad."

KTXL-TV reports that the officer was in North Sacramento Wednesday evening when she was hit and then pinned down in a yard.

KTXL-TV says other officers tried to reach her but a man with a rifle was shooting from another home.

She was taken to a hospital.

Police called in a SWAT team and have surrounded the home, warning residents to stay away or keep indoors because of the active shooter.

7:23 p.m.

Authorities say a Sacramento police officer has been shot in a possible ambush and a gunman continues to hold off those trying to reach her.

KTXL-TV says a lieutenant is reporting that the officer was responding to a report of shots fired in the North Sacramento neighborhood Wednesday evening when she was hit and is pinned down in the yard of a home.

The Sacramento Bee indicates the officer is in a backyard. There's no word on her condition.

Because of the gunman, police are warning residents to stay out of the area near the intersection of Redwood Avenue and Edgewater Road.
