My co-worker and I were extolling the deliciousness of pickled herring the other day (because who doesn’t do that during the course of a work day?) when it came to my attention that her ancestral heritage is mostly Swedish.

I told her I was mostly Norwegian, but have maybe 15 percent Swedish blood in me from my mother’s side of the family.

Oh yes... my parents grew up near Leonard Minnesota (in the northern part of the state). The whole town had a population of only 50 people yet they had two separate Lutheran churches right across the street from each other; one for the Swedes and one for the Norwegians.... No Joke!

Lynette: re Swedes vs. Norwegians. Reminds me of Stephen Sondheim's musical comedy, "A Little Night Music" The granny, Mme. Armfeldt (herself Scandinavian), advises her teen-aged grand-daughter: "My dear, never marry a Scandinavian, They are all quite mad."

Here is some good news for hunters. Last week my wife and I had to make a quick trip back to Wisconsin to attend a funeral. On the way, I planned to stop at my farm near Malta to see how the farm had wintered. But prior to turning off U.S. 2, we experienced three hours of steady rain.
