A man dressed in a military-style “Ghillie suit” who was attempting to provoke a Bigfoot sighting was struck by two vehicles and killed on U.S. 93 south of Kalispell Sunday night.

“He was trying to make people think he was Sasquatch so people would call in a Sasquatch sighting,” Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Jim Schneider said. “You can’t make it up. I haven’t seen or heard of anything like this before. Obviously, his suit made it difficult for people to see him.”

I'm sick of hearing that hypocritical statement towards people when they say something that others don't approve of. You get out of the country, no you get out, it's my country cuz I believe in freedom more... Don't you realize that they too have the freedom of speech to tell you to shut up?

If this was my loved one, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be on this site looking at other people's comments. Of course some of them are going to be negative. Comments are just personal observations. I have a right to my opinion just like anyone else who wants to utilize this comment board. Stop trying to limit what people can think, feel, and say. We are in the United States of America. If you don't like freedom of speech, GET OUT!

I just have to ask all of you people that are bashing this guy one question: Can he see your comments? No, of course he can't. All that your comments are doing is causing pain to the people that are suffering from his loss. The Flathead Valley has been my home for over 25 years and I am horrified by the disrespectful and downright rude behavior of some of you. Before you leave another comment about this mans "stupidity", stop and ask yourself if it's going to hurt the people left behind that are already suffering enough. A little consideration for others would be nice, people.

What a selfish idiot! fortunately, it wasn't one of my kids who mowed over this fool. I hope these girls can get the help that they need to get over this tragedy. Joke or no joke, time to grow up and use common sense. Running into traffic on hwy 93 wearing a dark suit is never going to end up well.

The best part of it is the fact that this has made the national news. Will people ask me if I live
in the Big Sky Country? No. Will they ask about about fishing in the clear streams? No. Will
they ask "Hey, do you live out by the Moron in the Camo suit? And I will say, "You Betcha"!
Hopefully this will help keep the relatives at home for a year or two!

I drove past the accident scene today on my way to Polson.... those kids had the rigs locked up trying to stop in time. No way of seeing him in time due to the highway geometry.

This selfish idiot traumatized innocent people for his own purposes and ended up dead. Those girls will be dealing with the images of this sorry individual being struck by their vehicle for a LONG time.

The story is national/international, casting the spotlight on Montanans as fools, thanks a lot, Mr. Tenley.

The news tonight talked about his fun-loving past, being charged with chocking a woman, holding a knife to her throat and threatening to slice her throat....

Nice friend and family guy you're all defending.....

If it had been one of my daughters that had run over his sorry gluteus maximus, I'd have already filed suit against his estate.

MT Mom, my condolences to you and his loved ones. If he was a prankster type, it makes no sense to deem it a suicide, if he was not 'down in the dumps' why would someone essentially commit suicide? Any chance of foul play? What was his private/professional/work life? Might he have been at the wrong place at the wrong time? Is it possible he was dead already when he was run over the first time? No reason to be suspicious, only that if the question is not asked, nobody bothers to look. Either way , this does not bring him back. There was an incident where two kids/teens in the south ended up dead because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time, but the authorities were quick to call it a suicide (Google mena, arkansas airbase and two teenagers, I believe it happened in the 80's)

Those of you that are making sick jokes about this should be ashamed of yourselves. No matter the reason, this is a very tragic incident for ALL the families involved. I bet that if this was your brother, son, friend and his child was reading the thoughtless, cruel things you were saying about his dad, you would be the first to jump onto the vigilante wagon and want to shut them up. What would your parents/family say about your behavior? Would they be proud of you? It is easy for you to make fun of someone when you can hide behind your screen name. Makes you real tough-NOT.
To Randy's family and friends: Ignore these idots for they don't have enough brain cells to see what they are doing to you and his child. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I do who Randy is.
To the girls and their families: Prayers for all of you. I hope you can find peace one day.

No laughing matter for those involved. Even if the accident had not happened and Mr. Tenley carried out this prank, someone would have called the cops. He most likely would have been arrested and possibly taken for a mental evaluation. I not trying to be cruel, but these days pranks don't usually go as planned. We live in a world that is in constant fear and unprediction. People will react in some of the worst ways when scared or provoked. My condolences to all families that are affected by this. There is a lesson to be learned by this. Think before you act, especially where public safety is concerned. Anything that involves Montana's "dieways" where tragedy strikes everyday should always be avoided.

This joke is not too funny for the girls that have to pay for the damage to their cars at the body shop. Hopefully they have comprehensive coverage. This could have caused a car to roll over and kill an entire family. The Darwin Award is clearly earned by the Bigfoot impersonator. The joke might have been a little funnier in the National Forest but even that could have a tragic ending, see http://www.bigfootencounters.com/sbs/kalispell.htm . If that was a hoaxter, he doesn't know how close he came to being dead.

Thanks to appaling comments, this same idiots contribute to furtherance of wide spread ignorance
surrounding the Big Foot subject. In that sense then, they too contribute to continued support for stupidity and blind ignorance.

With the information in this comment section alone, this tragedy could have value and meaning for people, but instead we had jack asses making fun of someone accidently killed preforming a prank.

Which then is more worthy of being nominated for a Darwin Award?

There's an old saying; "Speak not ill of the dead."

We can be thankful the two girls are still alive. Our hearts can break for his son Hunter that he thought dearly of and was VERY proud of. He spoke often of how much he loved his son. Where the accident happened he had dear friends that lived close by. I feel he chose this act to hurt / end himself. Randy was a smart man with a huge heart, was very willing to help his family and friends. He will be missed by many people. For those of you that knew him, know he would never hurt anyone intentionally. RIP Randy Tenley.

What is really sad is that in his successful attempt to win the Darwin Award, this idiot traumatized two young women. Not to mention the problems created for the emergency service workers who had to respond, and the pain and suffering left to his friends and relatives.

This story was picked up by Xfinity briefly here in the Seattle Metro area.

If the creature known as Big Foot had been more widely known as potentially dangerous
creature or being, then, perhaps this prank would never have happened.

Randy Lee Tenley didn't do anything more stupid then anyone one of us has done in our lives.
But Randy wasn't aware that Big Foot is a prime suspect in hundreds of cases involving missing
            and vanished people.

In order to make this tragedy valuable the information about this creature must be taken much more
seriously. My condolences to all the families involved. It was a prank and ill conceived but still just a
prank. However, It would likely never have happened had the public been better informed.

Over 3 years of research by David Paulides, a 20 year veteran lawman, has resulted in the publication of two books on the subject. His interviews are widely available on the net. I urge all people to investigate this matter much more seriously. For example, Hwy 16 in BC is know as the Highway of Tears because of the numbers of missing and vanished people. Then the odd stories of feet found in shoes along the coast of BC and even the US might begin to make more sense.

Even if this prank would have gone off without anyone getting hurt, where is the joke in it? It would have caused panic, emergency service resources would have been called into action, precious taxpayer's dollars would have been wasted.

I'm all for a good joke, but this had failure written all over it right from the start.

Yep, it's a real screw-up all-around. It partially reminds me of something I saw happen on a old-time highway, years ago. Probably about 1955, or so. This was in the state of Maryland coming from Annapolis to Virginia. I was young then. Anyway the car in front of ours on the highway was attacked by, or at least run into by a chasing dog. The dog hit the wheel of the car and was spun into a circular position which probably broke the dog's back. Said creature howled to high heavens. We drove on and the dog probably died soon thereafter. Anyway about 50 years later I had a boss (a fairly rich man) who said something that stuck with me, not that it's all that origional or brilliant or anything. He said (about some presidential candidate) "he's like a dog chasing a car and what's he going to do when he catches it." Anyway years later this thought came to my mind when I read this story. Congratulations to Trooper Jim Schneider for his comments. I especially liked his "impairment is up in the air" and the immortal "You can't make this stuff up." When Randy Lee Tenley died, a little bit of all of us died. RIP, friend.

It's all fun and games, until somebody gets killed because he totally lacked common sense. This has made a national news report...no wonder people in the rest of the world think we're a bunch of dumb yokels. And this guy was a father? All the more reason not to be dressed in sniper gear, dancing around on the highway in the dark. It's hard enough to avoid a car accident in Montana without someone showing a total lack of respect for people who are minding their own business on the road.

I feel sorry for the two girls involved. Thank God they weren't injured because of this senseless idiocy.

I'm sure this was a fun-loving fellow with a sense of humor and all, but that's no excuse for jumping out in the middle of the fekking highway in a camo suit at 10:30 at night, just to give the drivers a scare.

This wasn't a "funny stunt"... I mean, this was SUICIDE, although the medical examiner is going to call it "Death By Misadventure"... Seriously, there's just as much of a chance that one of those girl drivers (15-years-old, REALLY?) could have swerved hard, rolled her vehicle and been killed. Or spun-out in the highway, collided with another vehicle and killed a FEW MORE people.

See, I know fun is fun, but this joker actually got what he had coming.

Man, talk about some sick SOBs here in this valley. It's called an ACCIDENT, people. It happens. The guy in the sasquatch suit, and the girls driving did nothing wrong. That's what an accident is. Some people just feel the need to appear smarter and/or more responsible than everyone else.

Yeah the girls are scarred for life, but the dude LOST HIS LIFE. The two just don't compare. Peace to all involved. So sad.

The bottom line is the outcome of something that could've been funny turned out to be tragic for all parties involved and you should respect all parties involved. Rehberg hit the beach over at wayfarers park...when's the last time that happened prior... it's unfortunate to see the negative responses coming from a community so tightly nit...

Agreed Chewy and mtdawg! He is the one who was dumb enough to put on camouflage at night, and play on the highway. My heart breaks for the girls who hit this guy, those are the ones who will have to live with this guys "joke"! I am sure he didn't think about that.

Well said Chewy. Regardless of this guy's "jokester" attitude, he impacted two young girls. Any sympathy for this guy has to be tempered by that fact.

Luckygirl, maybe the 15yr old had a job, but regardless, it has nothing to do with her age. The "sasquatch" wasn't thinking, now these girls have to live with this, just plain STUPID...I am sorry for all involved.

I am just glad neither girl crashed trying to avoid this guy, nor did neither get hurt other than mentally scared for life!

Condolences to the family, this is incredibly sad.

On another note, what is a 15 year old doing driving at 10:30pm on a Sunday. Ugh.

No, I'm not going to keep my negative opinion to myself. This was an incredibly stupid thing to do. I don't care if he was trying to make people laugh. What he actually succeeded in doing was implanting a lifelong nightmare into the minds of the two young women. This could have easily resulted in a much worse accident.
Please folks, think before you act. Playing in traffic is never funny.

My heart does go out to his family, friends, and especially the two young women.

nothing funny about this- a tragic accident. The guy sounds like he was trying to have fun, make people laugh and smile. My kind of guy. RIP

This 'Jokester' has scared two or more innocent people for life while causing a huge loss for his family

How sad for everyone involved. Those poor girls who hit this guy. MT Mom sorry for your families pain and loss. I however do not think the other posts below had any joking about them. Just trying to understand an unfortunately poor planned or thought out joke.

Rest in Peace my friend. You will never be forgotten, nor will be the antics of an awesome friend. I will miss all the jokester pranks you pulled, it made you who you were, and that was a very special, individual person. You will be so missed here on earth and no convincing the man upstairs into more pranks. I will be watching for them and I will know where they originated. There are memories and non of them will be forgotten. God spead, until we meet again.

You know what this is my little 10 yr old brothers father. People really should keep their negative opinions to themselves. So what he was a jokster ...that was HIM. As his family we are grieving his loss while u inconsiderate people joke.
