A 4-year-old Utah boy who almost drowned in Glacier National Park was in stable condition Thursday at a Calgary, Alberta hospital.

The boy was walking across a bridge at Boundary Creek about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday when he fell off and was swept into Boundary Bay - located at the southern end of Upper Waterton Lake, just below the Canadian border, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

The boy's father jumped into the creek after his son and also was swept away by fast-flowing water. Nearby boaters retrieved the father and son, who was found submerged under several feet of water. He was unconscious and not breathing, according to rescuers.

An off-duty paramedic, a nurse, and public safety staff with Waterton Lakes National Park performed rescue breathing and CPR until the boy was taken by ambulance to a Cardston, Alberta, hospital then flown to a children's hospital in Calgary.

The boy's condition has improved dramatically since he was first admitted to the hospital, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

The boy and his father were visiting relatives in Lethbridge, Alberta, according to authorities.
