Briefs: Libby's Stevenson commits to Griz

Cy Stevenson, a senior running back and defensive end at Libby High School, announced via Twitter Wednesday that he has committed to the University of Montana to play football.

Stevenson, 6-foot-2 and 207 pounds, is the leading rusher for the 2-1 Loggers with 310 yards on 38 carries (8.2 average). He has scored three touchdowns. In 2021 he rushed for 792 yards and eight scores.

On Saturday Stevenson attended the Grizzlies’ 24-7 win over South Dakota; it was on that visit that Stevenson received his offer.

“No other place I rather be!!!” he tweeted Tuesday. “100% committed to the @montanaGrizFB so proud to represent the town of Libby Montana in the next chapter of my life!”

Four letterwinners are listed from Libby in the Griz annals: Harold Gompf (1952), running back Jody Farmer (1986-89), safety Vince Huntsberger (1998-2001) and defensive end George Mercer (2006-09).

Voight notches Eagle Bend ace

Tyler Voight used an 8-iron to ace the par-3 No. 6 on the Eagle Nine at Eagle Bend Golf Club Saturday.

Witnessing the shot were Greg MacDonald, Cyndi MacDonald and Kimberly MacDonald.

Fritz is Frontier Setter of Week

WHITEFISH — Sophomore Kaylee Fritz, a Glacier High product playing volleyball at Montana Western, was named setter of the week by the Frontier Conference after helping the Bulldogs win four matches at the Frontier/North Star Crossover tournament last week.

The 5-foot-7 Fritz averaged 11 assists and 2.43 per set, and her Bulldogs played 14 sets at the Havre tournament, losing just two: to Dickinson (N.D.) State and Valley City (N.D.) State.

Western also had the defender of the aeek in sophomore middle blocker Peyton Vogl of Townsend; the attacker of the week was Montana Tech’s Maureen Jessop, a senior from Corvallis. Tech also went 4-0 at the Crossover.

Riley, Akins homers lift PaddleHeads

BILLINGS — Brandon Riley homered to lead off the game, Jared Akins hit a two-run shot in the fourth inning and the Missoula PaddleHeads beat Billings 6-2 in the first round of the Pioneer League baseball playoffs Monday.

Lamar Sparks doubled twice for Missoula, the defending league champions. Anthony Fernandez hit a solo homer for the Mustangs.

The 3-game North Division series returns to Missoula Wednesday for Game 2. A third game, if necessary, is set for Thursday in Missoula.

In the South Division series, the Grand Junction Rockies won Game 1 13-5 over visiting Ogden behind two homers and seven RBIs from Jake Cruce. Jesus Valdez doubled and drove in four runs for Ogden, which hosts Game 2 Wednesday.

Mustangs sweep PL North awards

Billings Mustangs outfielder Juan Teixeira was named the Pioneer League’s hitter of the week for the North Division, and teammate Pablo Arevalo was named pitcher of the week Monday.

Teixeira, who began the season with the Boise Hawks, was 8-for-15 hitting last week with a homer, triple, four doubles and six runs batted in. In 15 games with the Mustangs he’s hit .393 and slugged .696 over 68 plate appearances.

Arevalo, who began the season with Ogden, threw seven innings of one-run ball at Idaho Falls last week, allowing six hits and striking out six.

The South Division awards went to Grand Junction outfielder Jake Cruce (12-for-27, four doubles, one HR, 11 RBIs) and Boise pitcher Matt Gabbert, who was one out from a no-hitter in the Hawks’ 6-2 win over Missoula Saturday. He threw 132 pitches, allowing one hit and one run in 8 2-3 innings. He struck out eight.
