Hockaday Museum of Art opens new exhibitions

| December 22, 2022 12:00 AM

The Hockaday Museum of Art is set next month to open two new exhibitions: “Broad Spectrum: Contemporary Quilts” and “Members Salon 2023.”

An opening reception for both exhibitions is set for Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Both exhibitions will be on view through Feb. 25, 2023.

Members are free and reception admission is $10 for the general public, with catered food by House of S&M and live music performed by Ross Bridgeman, as well as a wine bar.

“Broad Spectrum: Contemporary Quilts,” is organized by Northcutt Steele Gallery, guest-juried by Sarah Justice, and is touring to five venues across Montana, including the Hockaday, under the auspices of the Montana Art Gallery Directors Association. This unique exhibition, which came together during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, features over 30 quilted and textile works created by contemporary artists in the Studio Art Quilt Associates Inc. ranging in style, medium, genre and subject matter.

“Textile is a medium that is so varied and versatile,” said Justice. “From a distance many of these quilts look like a painting and that fascinates me.

Likewise, former Northcutt Steele Gallery Director, Leanne Gilbertson states, “The art quilt as form, technique, and idea promises some solace in a moment of segmentation and necessary isolation. The range of content and skill expressed in the exhibition is inspiring, offering a bounty of colors, textures, and concepts.”

Local SAQA artist Sally Glutting will also be giving a free art quilting presentation at the museum 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Feb. 9.

“Members Salon 2023” marks the 22nd year of this community favorite exhibition, bringing together the artwork of artist members. This year, nearly 80 artists submitted work in a variety of media including painting, photography, and sculpture. Many of the artists offer their work for sale. A portion of the proceeds from each sold artwork also benefits the Hockaday Museum of Art’s exhibition and education programs.

Members as well as the public are invited to view the art and vote in the People’s Choice Awards. Voting for People’s Choice closes on Feb. 4 and winners will be announced the following week of Feb. 6. People’s choice voting will commence on Jan. 12.

Winter gallery hours through May are Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday through Saturday is 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Regular admission is $5, seniors: $4, students: $2, youth under 18 are free as a result of a grant from Applied Materials Foundation.
