The city of Whitefish has opened a restroom for public use in the basement of City Hall building at the corner of Second Street and Baker for public use.

This bathroom previously was used as a locker room for the Police Department, but when the department relocated to the new Emergency Services Center the space was refurbished and opened for public use.

It is a single user, unisex bathroom and is handicapped-accessible by using the elevator for access to the basement level.

The facility will be open and available when City Hall is open — 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday — and during evening meetings in the City Council chambers.

City Manager Chuck Stearns said the restroom won’t have weekend availability, but city officials “do not want to find transients sleeping in there.”

The lack of a public restroom in the downtown area has long been a concern in the resort town, especially during the peak summer visitor months.
