Flathead, Glacier wrestlers drop Helena, Capital
HELENA - A point for a body slam and an escape with 10 seconds left sealed the deal as Flathead's Connor Thomas defeated defending state champion Tucker Erickson Saturday in triple overtime.
That was just one of many wins on the day for both the Flathead and Glacier wrestling teams.
Flathead defeated Helena Capital 54-31 and Helena High 51-27. Glacier defeated Capital 65-16 and Helena High 61-20.
"Connor's was definitely the match of the day," said Flathead coach Matt Owen of his team's effort.
"He's excited, but he's still staying hungry. He knows this isn't the one he really wants. He's hungry to bring home a state title this year," the coach said.
"These were very good wins for us," Owen said. "Helena High was very good because we lost to them at the AA Duals (last weekend).
"I think we're wrestling great. It looks like we are peaking at the right time. Hopefully, we're just getting ourselves ready for divisional," he said.
The Braves were without Steel Hahn, Cody Tally and Jake Stueben on Saturday - all three stayed home sick.
But Owen complimented the efforts of Jake Kinkle, Coty Piasecki and Jacob Egley. Kinkle and Egley each got two pins and Piasecki got two decisions, one in overtime.
"That's promising, having our young kids pick it up going into divisional," the coach said.
Kinkle's second win of the day - against Helena High - turned the tide of the dual. The Braves had lost a couple matches just prior.
As for the Wolfpack, it had several double winners on the day - Zach Barber (125), Lucas Mantel (135), Grant Tafoya (145), Shane St. Onge (152), Riley Pisk (160), Dawson Day (171), Boyce Ballard (189) and Mac Sutherland (215).
