A Kalispell man has filed as a candidate for Montana's Public Service Commission.

Republican John Campbell, 54, is unopposed in seeking election to the commission's District 5 position held by Tom Schneider.

Campbell has owned a trucking business in Kalispell for the past five years. Before that, he operated his business in Helena.

Campbell moved to Montana in 1976 after leaving the U.S. Marine Corps, and he took an interest in the Public Service Commission at a time when it was still involved in regulating intrastate trucking.

While living in Helena, he ran for a position on the commission in 1994, losing to the incumbent commissioner by 4,500 votes.

Campbell said he's interested in curbing energy rate increases.

He supports the development of new energy in Montana, particularly as alternative sources for the state's electric cooperatives.
