Dorthy Dagmar Metcalf, 89

Dorthy Dagmar Metcalf, 89, passed away Feb. 4, 2006, in Lewistown.

She was born Feb. 3, 1917, in Whitefish, the second of three daughters born to Hans and Colombe Zacharias who homesteaded in Broadview before coming to Whitefish in 1916.

Dorthy graduated with honors from Whitefish High School in 1935. She worked at J.C. Penney before moving to Kalispell and going to work at Montgomery Ward.

On Feb. 7, 1942, she married V. Bernard Metcalf of Kalispell. Soon after, he was drafted into the Army during World War II, and they moved to Marysville, Calif., where he was stationed during the war.

After the war they moved back to Kalispell, where Dorthy's husband worked for Pacific Power and she was a housewife. Dorthy enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening, canning and crafting. She was active in the Girl Scouts, and Dorthy and her husband especially enjoyed square dancing.

Her husband passed away July 8, 1984. Dorthy was admitted to the Montana Veterans Home in Columbia Falls on Nov.13, 1985, and transferred to the Montana Mental Health Care Center on Feb. 5, 2004.

Dorthy is survived by a sister, Gladys Fredenberg, of Lakeside; a daughter, LaDonna Jimison, and husband, Jerry, of Glendive; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 28, at C.E. Conrad Memorial Cemetery, with the Rev. David Merkel officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Columbia Mortuary in Columbia Falls.
