Hockaday offers painting workshops

| January 20, 2006 1:00 AM

The Hockaday Museum of Art is offering several art classes for adults this winter taught by special guest instructors. Former Hockaday Education Director Kelly Apgar will be teaching both a cattle marker workshop and a silk painting workshop and Shawna Moore will be teaching a workshop on encaustic painting.

The cattle marker workshop is Jan. 28 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cattle markers are extra-large oil paint sticks that allow for the creation of large, colorful paintings. The workshop will include an overview of materials and supplies, basic composition and color-mixing tips, instructor demonstrations and individual encouragement and instruction, as well as an optional group critique and slide presentation of the instructor's work.

The cost is $30 for museum members and $35 for non-members. Basic supplies (large selection of cattle markers and two sheets of primed canvas) are provided for participants to complete one or two paintings during the workshop. An optional supply list is available from the museum.

Apgar will also be instructing a silk-painting workshop on Feb. 25 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This workshop is open to both those who are new to silk painting as well as the more experienced. Apgar will get beginners started with a project and help more experienced silk painters create or finish a project. The cost is $30 for museum members and $35 for non-members. Supplies for the beginner's project are included. Previous silk painters are encouraged to bring their own supplies.

The encaustic painting workshop is March 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Encaustic painting involves applying layers of pigmented wax, which are then fused together with heat. Hands-on exploration will be stressed with a brief overview of materials and techniques. Moore exhibits at Avenida Art in Bend, Oregon, Darnell Fine Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Jest Gallery in Whitefish, and brings a 20-year history of drawing and painting to this exciting medium. Her work can be viewed at www.shawnamoore.com. The workshop is suitable for beginners, as well as those with some experience in art making or encaustic painting. The cost is $125 for museum members and $135 for non-members, which includes all wax, tools as well as a variety of grounds to complete up to six paintings.

Classes fill up fast and early registration is encouraged.
