Man injured in Park fall

An 18-year-old man who was hiking near Atsina Lake in Glacier National Park Tuesday was seriously injured in a fall that required an ALERT helicopter rescue.

Glacier Park spokesman Matt Graves said the man was hiking with a small group of people when he fell 30 to 40 feet Tuesday afternoon. The man's name and hometown were not immediately available.

Details were sketchy because of the remoteness of Atsina Lake, found in a headwaters basin that feeds the Belly River drainage in the northeastern corner of the park.

Graves said a Glacier Wilderness Guides group was the first on the scene, reporting the incident to park rangers.

ALERT helicopter was dispatched, landing in an area near the accident scene and returning to Kalispell Regional Medical Center with the victim at about 4:30 p.m.
