Stained glass is focus of spring workshops at the Hockaday

The Hockaday Museum of Art is offering several art classes for adults this spring taught by the museum's director of education, Kathy Martin. In addition, the museum has docent opportunities for art lovers who are interested in getting more involved in the museum's tours and educational programs.

Celebrate Easter by learning the art of creating beautiful Pysanky - Ukrainian Easter eggs - on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. In this ancient art form, eggs are decorated using beeswax and dyes. Step-by-step instruction will include using a kistka to draw the melted wax designs, dying with non-edible dye, wax removal, and finishing touches. All materials and tools will be provided for class use. Supplies to use at home can be purchased by arrangement with the instructor. This class is for ages 15 to adult and costs $18 for museum members and $20 for non-members.

Create your own stained glass panel in a beginning stained glass class. The basics of stained glass cutting, grinding, copper foiling, and soldering will be emphasized in this four-week class, which will be held from 10 a.m. to noon beginning April 22, and continuing on April 29, May 6, and May 13. Some stained glass history, pattern construction, and advanced project ideas will also be discussed. Students will provide their own art glass (to be purchased after first class) and protective eyewear. Other materials and use of tools are included in the class fee. Class size is limited to five. This class is for ages 15 to adult and costs $60 for Museum members and $65 for non-members.

On Saturday, June 10 a one-day introduction to stained glass for those who have little or no experience in cutting glass will be offered from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students will create a stained glass suncatcher, selecting a pattern from the instructor's collection. The focus of the class will be to learn the basic techniques of glass cutting, copper foiling, and soldering. Tool use and all materials are included in the cost of this workshop. Students must provide their own protective eyewear. Class size is limited to five. This class is for ages 15 to adult and costs $40 for museum members and $45 for non-members.
