Polson's girls tennis team started the season well by shutting out the Bigfork Valkyries 7-0 on Saturday. The Vikings pushed the Polson boys a little harder, but still lost 4-3.

"It was a good start," Polson coach Bob Hislop said. "The girls are real strong."

The Lady Pirates won their matches in convincing fashion. Only Bigfork's Jennifer Wirth managed to push her Polson opponent to three sets. Wirth fell to Addy Krantz, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

Maddie Bregetz and Cassie Ward, the only doubles team to have a match on the girls' side, took care of Bigfork's Jill Graham and Ariana Shults in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Bigfork forfeited the other two doubles matches.

On the boys' side, Bigfork's Owen Roberts went the distance against Jake Grebetz. The two took the first set into a tiebreak situation, and Grebetz won 6-7 (7-3). But Roberts rallied in the second and third sets to win the match.

"Our boys are young," Hislop said. "We have four returning letter winners. I'm pretty happy with everyone."

Notes: The contest between Polson and Stevensville was canceled due to rain.
