Volleyball: Corvallis trips Libby twice, claims Western A title

BUTTE — Once beaten Corvallis pulled off the trifecta on Saturday, besting Whitefish 3-0 in a loser takes third-place match and then toppling unbeaten Libby twice, 3-2 and 3-1 in two championship matches to claim the title at the Western A Divisional volleyball tournament at the Maroon Activities Center.

Libby defeated Corvallis 3-2 on Friday in the semifinals of the double-elimination event to qualify for the final.

Brookyln Rainer was Libby’s force at the net on the final day of play with 19 kills to go with five blocks in the first championship match and 20 kills in the second.

Mehki Sykes had 16 kills in the first title test and three aces.

Corvallis advances to state as the top seed from Western A while Libby is No. 2, Whitefish No. 3 and Stevensville No. 4.

The Class A state tournament begins Thursday in Bozeman.

Libby finished divisional action with a 3-2 mark, along with Whitefish. Corvallis was 5-1.
