Crosstown track meet at Glacier

The annual crosstown track and field meet celebrates its 10th edition today when Flathead and Glacier square off at 3 p.m. at Glacier.

This marks the fourth time the crosstown has been held at the Glacier High School track.

“There will be 300 athletes (boys and girls) performing between the two schools,” Flathead boys coach Dan Hodge said.

“That is one of the real pluses for track. Most of the time when we have a track meet at home, every athlete gets an opportunity to compete at a level that fits their ability.”

The Glacier girls and Flathead boys captured team titles a year ago in a meet at Legends Stadium that had three individual records broken and another tied.

The Glacier girls won 97-48 while the Flathead boys were nearly as impressive, rolling to a 87-58 victory.

“I hope the weather cooperates to get our 10th in,” Glacier girls coach Jerry Boschee said.

“It’s (crosstown) a pretty friendly rivalry. Both coaching staffs know each other well. The kids know each other pretty well.”

Glacier junior Annie Hill broke both distance records a year ago, besting her own mark in the 3,200 by more than five seconds with a time of 10 minutes, 31.14 seconds. She won the 1,600 in 5:25.67.

Glacier’s Heather Fraley had the old 1,600 mark.

Glacier’s JoJo Sherman cleared 9 feet, 9 inches in the pole vault to break the old standard by three inches, which was held by Glacier’s Monique Cannady.

The Glacier girls won 14 of the 17 events.

The Flathead boys won 12 events in their triumph over Glacier.

Flathead’s Micah Bucy cleared 6-3 to tie the crosstown high jump record, set by Flathead’s Matt Quist in 2013.

The Glacier boys set a new meet record in the 400 relay.

Glacier had swept the boys and girls crosstown team titles three years previously.

The Flathead boys and girls both lead the series with 5-4 records.

“I like the time of year we do it,” Boschee said of crosstown.

“Missoula does it right before divisional and always somebody gets beat up or hurt. There are no end of the season implications (in this one).”

Both schools end the week at invitationals — the boys in Butte for the Swede Dahlberg on Friday and the girls in Great Falls on Saturday.

“We have a big meet on Saturday, so does Glacier,” Hodge said.

“We’ll line them up and say go. The big meets are still ahead of us.”
