Flathead 2nd at PNW Classic

Nadeau, Gash-Gilder win wrestling titles

The Daily Inter Lake

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — Flathead finished second as a team and had two wrestlers win titles at the Pacific Northwest Classic wrestling tournament on Saturday at University High School.

Braves 170-pounder Tucker Nadeau earned a 4-3 decision against Othello’s Reese Jones and 220-pounder Matt Gash-Gilder earned a 4-2 decision over Coeur d’Alene’s Alex Marshall to secure individual titles.

Previously undefeated 132-pounder Trae Vasquez dropped his first match of the season in the 132-pound final in triple overtime to fellow All American Clai Quintanilla of Spokane North Central.

“They own four All-American medals between the two of them,” Flathead coach Jeff Thompson said.

“It was one of the top five high school matches I’ve ever seen.”

In total, nine Flathead wrestlers placed in the top four at the meet. Hunter Rush (106 pounds), Bryce Shaffer (113), Payton Hume (152) and Michael Lee (285) finished third and Tanner Russell (126) and Kenyon Fretwell (145) finished fourth.

“Overall I’m very happy with their performance,” Thompson said.

“It was nice to see different wrestlers, wresters we haven’t seen this year. In Washington, they focus on a different type of wrestling, more riding and trying to get the pin. We really improved a lot throughout the tournament with top and bottom wrestling.”

Flathead is back on the mat Tuesday with a home dual versus Missoula Hellgate at 6 p.m.
