WHS runners invite champs

WHITEFISH — Whitefish claimed the boys and girls team titles and Jace Kalbfleisch was an individual title on Saturday at the Whitefish High School Invitational cross country meet.

The Whitefish boys, with seven runners in the top 11 spots, posted a 26 score to easily best the rest of the field. Frenchtown was second, 75.

The WHS girls had three girls in the top 10. The Bulldogs finished with a 33 total to edge Columbia Falls by two points.

Kalbfleisch, a wire-to-wire winner, was the lone runner to crack 16 minutes on the WHS campus course. His time — 15:57.

His victory margin was 14 seconds over Gunnar Nabozney of Frenchtown.

“They ran really well,” Whitefish coach Sara Brist said of her boys. “Perfect conditions — not too hot, not too cold. It was also the first time ever we had a home meet for homecoming. We had a lot of people there supporting us.”

Sarah Latcham was the Whitefish girls top performer, placing third with a time of 19:26.

“First time for her to be under 20 minutes,” Brist said. “A personal best (time) for Peyton Twete (21:01, sixth place). A lot of them (girls) had their best today.”

Same can be said for the runners from Columbia Falls.

“We ran seven girls today and every girl ran a season or a lifetime best,” Columbia Falls coach Richard Menicke said.

“Samantha Mundel finished a close second to the winner of race. She (Mundel) set a school record (19:08).”

The old record was 19:19 set on same course in 2009 by Jinise Osborne.

“I’m really happy for her (Mundel),” Menicke said. “She’s coming into great form for the championship season. Her effort pulled us along today. Just a super outing from the girls team.”

For the Columbia Falls boys, Zayne Brunz was eighth, 16:52.

“He finally broke into the 16s,” Menicke said.

“He’s been working real hard.”
