Tennis: Glacier’s Walton, Johnson take doubles title in Helena

HELENA — Glacier’s Britt Walton and Spencer Johnson won the No. 1 doubles title at the Helena Invitational tennis tournament on Saturday.

Walton and Johnson defeated a team from Missoula Big Sky 6-2, 7-5 in the championship match.

“It’s a really good result,” Glacier coach Josh Munro said. “We knew they had it in them. They’ve been close to all these teams the past couple weeks and hadn’t been able to get over the hump.

“At times they were lights out. They were playing fantastic. The team they beat in the championship hasn’t lost all year, so that was a big win.”

Glacier’s Kellen Bates and Hailey Blalack advanced to the finals of the No. 1 boys and girls singles tournaments, respectively, but both finals were canceled due to darkness.

Bates led Missoula Hellgate’s Alex Braun 7-5, 2-1 when play ended. Munro said the first set took nearly two hours.

“Crazy-long set,” he said. “Some great points.”

Bates and defeated Glacier teammate Hunter Blalack 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals and Hailey Blalack defeated teammate Katya Kulikova 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals.

Glacier’s Jordan Bridwell advanced to the No. 2 singles final before losing 6-0, 6-0 to Missoula Hellgate’s Dylan Harvala. Glacier’s No. 1 doubles team of Veronica Walton and Kailea Vaudt also took second while Kirstyn Haugenoe and Kali Matheson took third in the No. 2 doubles tournament.

Rain caused numerous delays throughout both days of the tournament and many matches were canceled as a result.

“There were several stoppages for rain for long periods of time,” Munroe said. “Many matches didn’t finish.

“Wind was never really a problem. It was just rain all day yesterday and today.”

Flathead’s Ashi Petek advanced to the quarterfinals of the No. 2 singles tournament, but her semifinal match was rained out.
