Records fall at Archie Roe

The Flathead boys didn’t win the 45th Archie Roe Invitational, but setting a meet and state best time in the 400-meter relay felt pretty good Saturday.

The Braves finished with a time of 41.64 seconds, beating out Glacier — who now own the second best time in the state at 42.03. Columbia Falls finished third with a Class A best time of 43.17. The previous meet record was set in 2018 by Glacier.

“I got out really hard and ran the curve real well,” said Jacob Dolezal, who ran the first leg for Flathead. “Just set us up and we ran a 41, a really good PR.”

Dolezal also nabbed a victory in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, four inches — just two inches short of his joint-state best mark.

“I changed my mark to a long approach, so I came in feeling really confident," Dolezal said.

In the boys team competition Glacier brought home the victory totalling 161 points, Flathead finished second with 130. Whitefish (72), Hellgate (51) and Columbia Falls (43) round out the top five.

On the girls side, Flathead grabbed the victory with 140 points over Glacier (114). Hellgate (98), Whitefish (61), and Columbia Falls (39) finished in the top five.

The Flathead girls set the fifth best time in AA for the 400 relay at 50.07, but came up short on the day behind a Whitefish squad that moved to the top of the Class A ranks for 2024 with a 48.81.

Brooke Zetooney — who anchors that Whitefish relay — overcame a sore back and grabbed two meet records. She won the 100 meter dash in 12.33  — just .01 off her season best — and then the 200 with a PR of 24.90.

That 200 time puts her at the top of Class A ahead of teammate Rachel Wilmot, who ran a personal best 25.23. The previous meet records were set by fellow Bulldog Marlow Schultz in 2013 at 12.48 in the 100 and 25.53 in the 200.

“I think it's just kind of a pinched nerve, nothing too detrimental,” Zetooney said. “I did scratch shot because of it, but hopefully it will be alright.”

Hellgate runners Sophia Miller and Kaitlyn Skinner duked it out in the girls 1,600, with Miller winning in a state-best 5:01.74. Skinner’s 5:01.80 put her second best in the state.

Glacier’s Lauren Bisson finished third with a 5:18.02, good enough for eighth best in AA this spring. Bisson picked up a victory in the 3,200 meters, setting the third best time in AA with a 11:17.09.

Columbia Falls’ Jack Phelps set the third fastest Class A 400 meter time en route to taking the victory at 50.44. Teammate Malaki Simpson ran a 10.92 and edged out Glacier’s Kash Goicoechea (10.97) and Flathead’s Ben Bliven (10.98) for the 100 meter victory.

“I didn’t think I really had a chance in this, I am better in the 200,” Simpson said. “Halfway through that race I found my drive and had a good turnover. I got a good lean at the end and I think that’s ultimately what got me the win.”

Whitefish’s Simon Douglas won the 800 meters with a personal best 1:56.83, the third fastest time in Class A.

Glacier’s Ethan Anderson picked up the victory in the boys 110 hurdles, running a 14.47. Anderson also set a personal best in the 200 meters, finishing second with a 22.43 — the seventh best time in AA.

Out in the field, Glacier’s throwing duo of Aiden Krause and Henry Sellards notched a pair of top-three finishes with Krause winning the discus at 185-4 and finishing second in the shot put at 49-1. Sellards won the shot put at 50-1.5 and finished third in the discus at 141-5.

On the girls side, Glacier’s Kai Johnson set a new personal best in the discus with a throw of 118-3, putting her fourth in Class AA and second on the day behind Plains’ Alexis Deming (120-3). Johnson threw a 39-5.25 in the shot put, besting Deming who threw 39-3.5.
